Best & Worst New Shows: The TVLine Staff Shares Its Picks… and Passes

Television

Over the next three months, dozens of new TV series will make their debuts, jockeying for top priority on your DVRs. But which freshman fare is actually worth your precious time?

To help you sort through this annual onslaught of comedies and dramas — premiering not just on the broadcast networks, but also on Amazon, Netflix and Hulu — TVLine’s intrepid staff has consumed as many fall pilots as possible and boiled them down to the ones you should absolutely watch… or by all means skip.

In the attached gallery, each TVLine editor has made his or her case for three fall TV picks, plus one pass. (As is tradition, we made our selections without revealing them to one another, so any overlap is purely coincidental. Most of us are reading this compiled list for the very first time, along with you!)

It’s worth noting that screeners were unavailable for several new series, including HBO’s Watchmen and anything that’s launching with Disney+ and Apple TV+ in November. Since we limit our picks/passes to shows we’ve actually seen, such programs were not up for consideration.

Last year, 10 of the TVLine staff’s collective 12 “WATCH!” recommendations apparently were obeyed and thus wound up renewed. (The Kids Are Alright, we will miss you most of all.) Similarly, two of our most vocal “SKIP!” suggestions, I Feel Bad and Happy Together, indeed got skipped at renewal time.

Scroll through the gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see our picks and passes for the 2019 fall TV season, then hit the comments with the shows you plan to try!
