Fast & Furious Writer Teases Return Of Luke Evans’ Owen Shaw

Movies

Luke Evans’ Owen Shaw didn’t appear in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, but longtime franchise writer Chris Morgan teases that he will return. Evans made his Fast & Furious debut in the sixth installment of the series as the main villain of the feature. Unfortunately for him, he was left in a coma following those events to begin Furious 7 before he returned for a surprise appearance in The Fate of the Furious in 2017.

Owen may be the first Shaw family member that the Fast & Furious franchise introduced, but he is not the one who has received the most attention of late. His brother, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), just starred in his own spinoff movie opposite of Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). Hobbs & Shaw introduced audiences to Deckard and Owen’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) and brought back their mother Magdalene (Helen Mirren) in a small capacity, too. But, Owen was noticeably left out of the family reunion and – as director David Leitch recently told us - wasn’t even part of the plan.

Screen Rant recently had the opportunity to talk to Chris Morgan, who has served as the architect of the Fast & Furious franchise in recent years, and asked him where Owen has been during these adventures. He couldn’t give a definitive answer for what Owen has been up to recently, but did leave us with a tease that we probably haven’t seen the last of him.

I think we are, again, a world that is expanding. We have a lot of stories that we’re going to be telling and a lot of interconnected character things. I would just say that I’m a huge fan of that character. Just wait.

Luke Evans as Owen Shaw in The Fate of the Furious

Like his brother, Owen may have done some nefarious things to the main characters in the Fast & Furious franchise before, but he has also shown a willingness to turn the other cheek and help when needed. It’s possible that the next time Owen appears, he will do so as a hero and not a villain. After all, if Deckard can be welcomed into the family despite murdering Han, then Owen should be met with open arms when he does return.

If we are supposed to look out for more of Owen Shaw in the future, then this does raise the question of when he will appear again. Filming is currently underway on Fast & Furious 9, so it is possible that he will make an appearance there. The last time we saw Owen, he was helping save Dom Toretto’s child, so maybe he’ll spend more time with baby Brian while Toretto’s crew is off on their next adventure. There have been no reports that Evans is in Fast & Furious 9 though, so his appearance would be another surprise.

The most likely option for Owen’s return is in a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw. The movie has made over $750 million worldwide, which should be enough for Universal to move forward with plans for another installment. Since the first film fleshed out Hobbs’ home life, its possible that Hobbs & Shaw 2 could be a Shaw family affair, making it the perfect place for Owen to return. If that is the plan, then hopefully it won’t be long before it is confirmed.
