Fashion

Fashion can be gloriously fun and while we wholeheartedly encourage all forms of self-expression through personal style, we still have ~opinions~ when it comes to celebrity red carpet moments. Here, FLARE editors (and friends) choose the stars they think were best and worst dressed at the Golden Globes.

Best dressed: Kerry Washington

When it comes to the best dress of the night, IT IS HANDLED! Hands down, the honour goes to Kerry Washington. She’s known for taking a risk on the carpet while still remaining classic, and her seriously scandalous Altuzarra blazer and skirt fit the bill. It’s SO sexy and unexpected for the actor, but also makes me feel like I could and should rock something similar? Bookmarking for my next bday, for sure. —Katherine Singh, assistant editor

Best dressed: Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett is ethereal, so obviously coming out in a dress that mimicked the actual Golden Globe award is a bold and beautiful move that I respect and love wholeheartedly. Amen. —Amy Valm, contributor

Not-so-best dressed: Charlize Theron

Listen, I am always here for a Charlize moment, but her dress was too reminiscent of that ’90s show Veggie Tales. She looked like an asparagus who was having a bra slip. There, I said it. —Amy Valm, contributor

Best dressed: Phoebe Waller-Bridge

I’m a sucker for a good suit, and the red carpet-worthy details on this Ralph & Russo design, like the fabric’s metallic weave and the lace trim, make it a standout. Plus, I love that the plunging neckline is a subtle, sexy nod to Fleabag’s famous black jumpsuit. Best part of this look: PWB is now auctioning it to raise money for fire relief in Australia. —Charlotte Herrold, editor-in-chief

Not-so-best dressed: Dakota Fanning

Honestly, it’s a snooze fest. I feel like I’ve seen Fanning in this twee tulle confection a zillion times and I’m over it! —Charlotte Herrold, editor-in-chief

The power shoulders. The giant sleeves. The plunging (yet still classy) neckline. The colour. And those Titanic-esque jewels! All of this makes for a solid, show-stopping red carpet look. Nailed it! —Madelyn Chung, contributor

Not-so-best dressed: Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is, indeed, a gift to us all, but we need not be reminded, especially in the form of this dress. Honestly, this feels like a leftover from Christmas dinner—except it was enjoyed far past its expiration date. —Madelyn Chung, contributor

Not-so-best dressed: Taylor Swift

Did we learn nothing from the great Kim Kardashian Met Gala debacle of 2013?! Busily patterned floral sofa fabric should be left on the couch. Or at least gifted to Carrie Underwood who would definitely wear this floral monstrosity as one of 11 outfit changes at the CMAs. —Jennifer Berry, managing editor

Billy Porter wears a white suit on the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet

Best dressed: Billy Porter

Billy Porter went and invented his own ballroom category for the Golden Globes in this custom Alex Vinash creation: Blaque Swan. In all-white-everything with a feathered train, 4,000 Swarovski crystals and bedazzled Jimmy Choos, it was like he was strutting right through the gates of fashion heaven. —Russ Martin, social media editor, Hello! Canada

Not-so-best dressed: Cate Blanchett

When it comes to red carpet fashion, Cate Blanchett’s set a high bar for herself. She’s a perennial fave, but this canary yellow Mary Katrantzou was a miss—at least by her own standards. The dress did work from certain angles, though. The shots of Cate from behind looking over her shoulder are exquisite. —Russ Martin, social media editor, Hello! Canada

Not-so-best dressed: Priyanka Chopra

Maybe it’s my personal bias against bright pink, but it looks like a bad prom dress. —Blythe Hunter, contributor
