Interview: The Keymakers

Celebrity News, Fashion, Gossip, Music

Hello Guys! So happy we get to chat with you today! We know you have kicked off the Spectra tour – how is it going?

Red: It’s going really well! This our first ever tour, so it’s been a lot of just getting used to being on the road, getting used to playing so often, playing in different settings and making adjustments – it’s been a great learning experience but the whole thing has been SO much fun.

How many dates are left on the tour and have you had any challenges yet?

Rome: Officially we’ve got 8 left, but the shows don’t stop there. Since we’ve started the tour we’ve still been trying to play as much as we can and book even more shows, so we’ve already got a few more lined up heading into spring. There have been some challenges forsure. You can’t guarantee the type of audience you’re playing to or what the venue will be like. Sometimes the sound is great and there are no worries, other times it seems like we’re making adjustments the whole show to get things to sound the way we want them to. Sometimes the crowd is super energetic and supportive from the jump, and sometimes you kind of have to bring the energy yourself and hope people will feed off of that. That’s been part of the fun though, learning how to adjust on the fly and fix things as soon as you sense them going wrong.

What have you experienced as a musician that gives you a clear understanding of just how ‘tough’ the industry can be at times?

Red: Honestly I think it’s just the constant reminder of how many of us there are. You can never let your head get too big because no matter how many people are out there saying how much they like your music and believe in what you’re doing, there are millions and millions of other people saying the exact same thing about other artists. We believe in our talent and our music, but we’re still just two artists in a sea of so many millions. That’s why no matter how much success we have, we always have to try and outwork everyone around us. That’s our mentality. Every single rejection doesn’t mean we’re not good enough or we’re not going to be good enough. It just means we have to keep working.

If you could work with any music producer in the world who would that be and why?

Rome: Probably ODESZA. They’ve always been huge inspirations for us and the way they see music and manipulate sounds is something that is pretty unique in a genre where a lot of the music can start to sound the same. To pick their brains about their process, the inspiration behind some of their songs, how they approach performing live – it would be an awesome experience for us.

What are some of the highlights of your musical career which also lead you to this point in time?

Red: Honestly these past few months have been such a whirlwind for us with everything that’s been going on, but it’s been full of highlights. Releasing first ever EP is definitely one of them. Crossing a million plays on Spotify was huge for us. Playing our first show in NYC just this past Monday. Those are the first things that come to mind. We just want to keep making as many highlights as possible in 2020.

Do you think a musician needs to be in Los Angeles to ‘make it’ in music?

Rome: It’s funny you ask that because we’re actually planning to move there this summer 🙂 But honestly, I wouldn’t say so at all. Yes, there’s a lot of opportunity there, and that’s part of the reason we’re moving (in addition to just being absolutely done with winter…), but there’s opportunity everywhere, and I think what’s right for one artist might be wrong for another. Also, the concept of “making it” just has never really resonated with us. Success means different things to different people, and we don’t necessarily need to be walking down red carpets or performing at the Grammy’s to feel like we “made it”. I think artists should visualize their own goals, chart out plans to get there, and then work as hard as they can. I think all of that can happen without LA, but hey, ask us again in a couple of years!

Where can we find your music online and follow and support you on social media?

Red: Follow us on IG (@thekeymakers)! That’s definitely the best way to get in touch and we absolutely love connecting with our fans. After that, follow us on Songkick (http://bit.ly/thekeymakerslive) to find out when we’re playing near you – we’d LOVE to meet you!
