Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon has given her official endorsement to Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, saying he’ll “turn the system upside down”.

On Friday the Sanders campaign released a video of the actress and LGBT+ activist explaining her decision, along with a statement.

“In the same terrifying and muscular way that Trump is a force for so much of what is bad in this country, in this world, Bernie has that same kind of muscularity of vision but for good,” she said.

“A candidate who is too beholden to big money and the establishment and just basically doesn’t want to rock the boat is never going to be a powerful enough counterbalance to what Donald Trump has to offer.

“You need someone as vigorous and who is wanting to turn the system upside down.”

She continued: “People don’t vote for somebody who kind of checks a lot of boxes. People vote for somebody that they have a strong emotional connection to the things that person is saying. And that’s what Bernie is offering.”

Nixon will be campaigning for Bernie Sanders in Las Vegas this weekend, followed by New Hampshire on Tuesday.

She joins a host of celebrities who have lent their names to Sanders’ campaign, including Ariana Grande, Danny DeVito, Cardi B, Mark Ruffalo, Emily Ratajkowski, Sarah Silverman and Lizzo.

Nixon is best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in HBO’s Sex and the City franchise but has become increasingly politically active in recent years.

In 2018 she ran against Andrew Cuomo as a Democratic candidate for governor of New York State. When one politician attempted to smear her as an “unqualified lesbian,” she turned the personal attack on its head by making her campaign slogan “Vote for the homo, not the Cuomo.

Unfortunately her campaign was unsuccessful, with Nixon receiving 34 per cent of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 66 per cent.

She has now returned to acting and is set to direct a groundbreaking lesbian Broadway show, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, which will be produced by Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia De Rossi.
