Retired NBA player Dwayne Wade and is on track to win all ‘Father of the Year awards’ after his daughter, Zaya, came out as trans.
Going public has proved a test for the family, as rappers such as Young Thug and Boosie Badazz have assailed them with unwarranted anti-trans takes.
Nevertheless, Wade told Watch What Happens Live! Tuesday the tender moment he and his wife, Gabrielle Union, reached out to the cast of Pose for advice.
Dwayne Wade: ‘We wanted to make sure we got the pronouns and language right.’
A viewer called into host Andy Cohen to ask what’s the “biggest lesson” he learnt about being trans means from the cast of the award-winning show.
The 38-year-old responded to a viewer’s question asking what he and Union, 47, learned about what
“We didn’t have a lot of information and we reached out about pronouns,” Wade answered.
“We wanted to make sure we didn’t get it wrong.
“We reached out about the pronouns making sure we said the right things to our daughter.”
He continued: “She’s identifying as a young lady.
“We wanted to make sure we got the pronouns and language right.
“We reached out to make sure we had the information we needed because we’re learning in this process as well.”
Cohen then said he “admire how [Wade] has handled this entire thing.
“You’re teaching so many along the way, so I really commend you.”
Not all have been supportive of Zaya.
An array of rappers and actors have launched scathing critiques on Wade for his decision to be, well, a loving, supportive parent.
Wanted criticisms and attempts to trade anti-trans barbs with the sportsperson have included Youth Thug deliberately misgendering and then spouting that “God doesn’t make mistakes”.
Musician Boosie Badazz blasted Zaya, too. Similarly misgendering Zaya and imploring Wade to “not cut [Zaya’s] d**k off”.
