The followup novel introduces an older Elio, who is in (another) relationship with an older man
Hollywood’s straight Prince of Twinks Timothée Chalamet and his co-star Armie Hammer have both reportedly signed up for Call Me By Your Name 2.
Since Call Me By Your Name, there has been consistent buzz that a film followup could eventually be in the works.
Now, director Luca Guadagnino has confirmed that both stars have officially signed up for the sequel in an interview with Italian magazine La Repubblica.
“Before coronavirus, I had a trip to the United States to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don’t want to say, to talk about the second part,” Guadagnino said.
“Unfortunately, we had to cancel it. Of course, it is a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors.”
“Everyone will be in the new movie,” the Italian director confirmed.
A sequel to the original Call Me by Your Name novel was published in 2018, reprising the story of the couple years later.
Find Me, was published by André Aciman in 2018.
Call Me By Your Name was released in 2017 to widespread acclaim, and won an Oscar for Best Adapted SCreenplay.
Chalamet, 24, was nominated for best actor – the third-youngest person to ever be nominated in that category – and Guadagnino was nominated for best picture.
Chalamet recently spoke out after learning that Crema, known as the picturesque real-world setting for the acclaimed gay film, has been impacted by coronavirus.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “I’m thinking of EVERYONE in hotspots right now, young and old, but CREMA – my heart is with you, I can’t believe this is happening.
“Heartbroken at these stories I‘m reading, in locations I know! Please try to stay safe.”
All of Italy has been placed on lockdown due to coronavirus, with residents not permitted to leave their homes as deaths continue to spiral. Crema, in the Lombardy region, is inside one of the worst-impacted areas.
More than just a filming location, the town of Crema featured prominently on screen in Call Me by Your Name – with Elio and Oliver making trips into town and showcasing its picturesque scenery.
Director Luca Guadagnino had hinted previously that some preliminary development has begun on developing the follow-up film, while Hammer and Chalamet had said they are both “1,000 per cent in” to reprise their roles for a sequel.
