Resident Evil 3 Pokes Fun at Resident Evil 2’s Progression

Movies

Resident Evil 3, like its predecessor, remakes the classic PS1 game from the ground-up.  Capcom is establishing a new foundation for the franchise, and Resident Evil 3 builds upon the previous game, both mechanically and in the story.

The two games are entirely different beasts, however, as Resident Evil 3 is much more linear and action-focused than the previous game. Resident Evil 2, like the original, had a big focus on methodical exploration.

Partway through Resident Evil, 3 players have to make their way through the iconic Racoon City Police Department, where the bulk of RE2 takes place. Of course, keep in mind that the events of RE3 take place before Leon and Claire even arrive in Raccoon City. Considering the short time between the two games, it’s a bit of a slog for players to go through the exact same place again.

Capcom doesn’t want players to repeat the same puzzles they played only a year ago, so they smartly block them off. Specific puzzles or important pieces from Resident Evil 2 are blocked off by sheets or signs. As Carlos makes his way around the station he’ll make remarks like “You want me to keep out? I’ll keep out.”

The best part, however, is when Carlos stumbles upon one of the Spade Key doors. At this point, he exclaims Here’s a weird fucking door!” To which is partner replies ”Leave it! We’re here for Bard.” Canonically, Carlos can’t mess with any of the puzzles or objects in the police department as it’d mess up the puzzles that Leon and Claire need to solve later on. It may cut down on the length of the Resident Evil 3 remake, but it’s a neat little way of referencing the last game.
