Mary Poppins is leading her own creepy team of gifted youngsters in a fan artwork that’s inspired by the X-Men and will give you nightmares. Both the Mary Poppins and X-Men film rights now reside with the House of Mouse, so while it’s pretty unlikely there will ever be a crossover between Mary Poppins and the X-Men, it technically isn’t impossible.
In 2018, Disney did produce a sequel to Mary Poppins starring Emily Blunt in the title role. Mary Poppins Returns was well-received and had a strong performance at the box office, but needless to say, it’s unlikely to ever eclipse the original. Disney, and more specifically, Marvel Studios are in a somewhat similar position with the X-Men franchise. The X-Men films produced under the Fox banner only just ended with X-Men: Dark Phoenix (or will, rather, when and if New Mutants ever releases), and though that film was a dud for the long-running franchise to end on, Fox’s X-Men movies are still widely enjoyed. Rebooting the X-Men and especially their most popular characters is going to be a tricky operation for Marvel, and it might be a good idea them to adapt the X-Men with a wildly different approach.
In a new fan artwork from Bosslogic, Mary Poppins can be seen in charge of a couple of supernaturally talented children. It’s an eerie scene, though, rather than comforting because of their red-glowing eyes. Not to mention, whatever sinister-looking implements the one child is telekinetically lifting. Also note, The Shining-inspired carpeting making the image just that much creepier. Check out the full piece, below:
The Tim Burton film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, based on the novel by the same name, gives off a similar vibe with Eva Green’s character being the headmistress of a home for children with unusual abilities. At the time of its release, comparisons to X-Men and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngters were common, and it wasn’t helped by fact its screenplay was written by X-Men: First Class‘ Jane Goldman. Miss Peregrine’s was only moderately successful, however, and a sequel never came to be.
As a concept, though, a character like Mary Poppins running her own spin on a mutant school is a neat idea. Children grappling with strange abilities they can barely control isn’t an idea exclusive to the X-Men, after all, and it would be interesting to see a version of that story that was a little more supernatural. In the meantime, fans can hold out hope for New Mutants to release someday since it’s already mixing the horror-genre with the typical mutant story.
