Uncharted Movie Release Date Moved Forward Three Months To July 2021

Uncharted fans will now have to wait a little less time to see the upcoming movie adaptation: Sony has bumped its release up by three months. Uncharted is based on the popular video game series of the same name, which tells the story of a treasure hunter, Nathan Drake. He’s joined by Elena Fisher, a journalist who also becomes Drake’s romantic partner. The game also features Victor Sullivan, Drake’s mentor of sorts, with fellow hunter Chloe Frazer rounding out the group. So far, the series spans a decade, with the first game coming out in 2007 and the most recent, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, releasing in 2017.

Spider-Man star Tom Holland will play Drake in the movie adaptation, while Mark Wahlberg will take on the role of Sullivan. Meanwhile, Antonio Banderas will play an undisclosed part. The film will tell Drake’s origin story and is inspired by the fourth game in the series, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Unfortunately, the movie version of Uncharted has faced many delays despite a strong cast and story idea. After a lengthy development process involving several directors, the movie was given a December 2020 release date. However, even before the coronavirus pandemic took its toll on Hollywood, Uncharted was moved to 2021.

Last month, as the coronavirus started to take hold in the States, Sony halted production on Uncharted. Holland later revealed this happened on his very first day of filming. Only a couple of weeks later, the studio announced Uncharted‘s release would be delayed until October 2021, joining many other movies facing the same fate. However, Sony has now revealed it will make the rare move of pushing Uncharted‘s release forward three months, to July 16, 2021. The news comes soon after Holland shared he wasn’t sure if he would first film Uncharted or Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 after movies are able to resume production.

It may help that Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 also had its release date moved back four months to November 2021. It’s unclear if the changes for both films will have an effect on or are a result of which movie Holland will film first. He joins many other actors and creatives who will have to adapt to new shooting schedules and possibly filming locations due to the coronavirus. It’s also unknown at this time when studios will even be able to release films to theaters, especially in densely populated cities like New York and Los Angeles.

Uncharted fans are probably pleasantly surprised by this release date change. Considering the movie’s journey so far, another delay would be far more likely than it releasing soon than expected. Given the ever changing nature of the coronavirus, there’s always a chance Uncharted will be moved again. However, fans should be happy with where it stands currently.
