James Gunn Read Every Single Suicide Squad Comic To Prepare For DC Sequel

Movies

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn was very prepared to helm the upcoming DC film, since he’s read every single Suicide Squad comic and much of Harley Quinn’s stories. DC’s ragtag team of villains already hit the big screen in 2016’s Suicide Squad, but while it was a financial success, it was slammed with poor reviews from fans and critics alike. As a result, it seemed like a direct sequel to the film was out of the question; that was proven to be true when Gunn was hired to write and direct a semi-sequel, semi-reboot of the property. Gunn recently said watching the 2016 film isn’t necessary to see his, though some characters from the original film will be making reappearances. Those characters are Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

The Suicide Squad was one of the few DC films to avoid the release date shuffle that occurred last week and saw movies like The Batman shift to combat coronavirus-related issues. As of right now, The Suicide Squad is still slotted for release in August 2021, as Gunn is working on editing the film from home. Fans are still eagerly awaiting a proper trailer or image for the film, but Gunn has been kind enough to offer some teases about what to expect from his first DC film. Plot details are scarce, but if one thing is certain, it’s that not everyone will survive to the end of the film.

Gunn opened up a bit about how he approached The Suicide Squad after being asked if he had any consultants on the film who read the comics. According to Gunn, he’s “read all the comics I can concerning the characters I’m writing. For instance, I’ve read every single comic featuring every iteration of #TheSuicideSquad & probably 85% of everything #HarleyQuinn has ever been in up until the time of shooting.” Clearly, he was very prepared to write and direct this film, and his knowledge of the source material will likely appease fans who are hoping for a better adaptation of the characters.

Gunn’s added comments about reading most of Harley’s stories tie back to his previous admission that Harley is one of his favorite comic book characters. Robbie’s Harley was seen as one of the few positives in the 2016 Suicide Squad, and she recently headlined another DCEU flick, Birds of Prey. Many are excited to see what her role in The Suicide Squad will be, especially since Gunn promised she would go on quite the journey throughout the film.

While it’ll still be a while before The Suicide Squad rolls out in theaters, the teases Gunn has revealed has stoked fan excitement. So much of the film is still a mystery (including its rating), but that hasn’t stopped anticipation from rising. Provided no unforeseen delays hit it, DC fans can expect this new version of The Suicide Squad to burst onto the big screen at the end of summer 2021.
