Mortal Shell’s Rotten Autumn Update Adds New Skins, Music, & Photo Mode

Movies

Mortal Shell’s latest update adds lots of extra content for the recently released Soulslike, including new skins, alternate soundtracks for boss encounters, and a robust photo mode. Released this August, Mortal Shell is an even darker take on the From Software games that inspired it, though some reviews found that it didn’t do enough to distinguish itself.

Despite its somewhat mixed reception, Mortal Shell still offers fans of difficult action games plenty to sink their teeth into. The game introduces a unique mode of character progression, where players can choose between multiple different shells that change how they’re able to fight and survive in its hostile environments. Choosing the right shell and building out its suite of abilities is key to surviving the difficult game, and there’s enough variety in how they play to even support multiple runs through the game.

The most recent update to Mortal Shell adds even more variety to the game’s shells, not in abilities, but in appearance. As publisher Playstack revealed today, Mortal Shell’s free Rotten Autumn brings the game’s version of Halloween costumes, along with a few other treats. After installing the new update, which was released today, players will have 10 new cosmetic shell shades to style themselves in. The update also adds alternative music tracks for the game’s brutal boss fights, as well as a new photo mode. At least as far as Playstack has revealed, the Rotten Autumn update doesn’t add any new gameplay features, but it still adds lots of bonuses for fans of the unforgiving game.

Mortal Shell’s new photo mode in particular seems worth a look for players who’ve already fought their way through the game or are diving in for the first time. Following in the footsteps of excellent photo modes in recent games like Ghost of Tsushima, the new photo mode in Mortal Shell features plenty of options for virtual photographers to get the perfect shot of the game’s grim world. Mortal Shell’s dark environments may not seem as photogenic as the island of Tsushima, but its customizable camera still looks more than capable of making it look beautiful – in a horrific kind of way.

Mortal Shell’s Rotten Autumn is free and available now for all platforms. There’s no word on whether Mortal Shell will be getting any more substantial updates coming up soon, but this latest patch is a welcome surprise nonetheless, and could be the perfect reason to revisit the monstrous Mortal Shell during the spookiest time of the year.
