The upcoming Child’s Play TV show, Chucky, has been confirmed to pick up after the events of Cult of Chucky. Don Mancini’s 2017 Chucky movie was the second of two installments that had direct-to-video releases. Mancini directed Curse of Chucky in 2013, which acted as a soft reboot and re-introduced Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) in the post-credits scene. Cult of Chucky continued that storyline, focusing on Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) after Chucky framed her for killing her family and was sent to a mental hospital.
2019’s Child’s Play reboot with Mark Hamill didn’t have any connections to Mancini’s storyline, but the creator is set to continue the original Chucky’s adventures in a TV show on Syfy. Cult of Chucky ending on a cliffhanger with Chucky possessing Nica and escaping the asylum with Jennifer Tilly’s Tiffany. It was expected that Chucky would resolve that storyline until the official plot synopsis for the show had Chucky being found in a garage sale in “an idyllic American town.” When the show was first announced, Brad Dourif was the only actor confirmed to return. In the past year, Fiona Dourif, Tilly, Vincent, and Christine Elise (Kyle) were all cast in the series, adding more confusion about the show’s storyline.
While there was initially some confusion on whether Chucky would connect to Cult of Chucky, that has since been confirmed in Comic-Con International‘s panel for the Child’s Play TV show. During “The Legacy of Chucky” panel for Comic-Con@Home, Fiona Dourif briefly spoke about the story details of the upcoming series explaining, “Chucky the series picks up after Nica, Chucky, and Tiffany have left the insane asylum. And they’re having a great time.”
If the series picks up after Cult of Chucky, then it is still a mystery how it connects to what was seen in the first trailer for Chucky. The official trailer shows a teenager named Jake (Zackary Arthur) buying a Good Guys doll from a yard sale. The Chucky trailer doesn’t mention any story details of Cult of Chucky, and the veteran actors don’t make an appearance. One possibility for this is that the show will resolve Cult of Chucky‘s story in the first few episodes before moving on to the events seen in the trailer. However, that probably wouldn’t go over well since the return of Vincent, Tilly, and Elise is a big selling point for the series.
Even though the trailer gave fans a glimpse of what to expect, it also raised a lot of questions. There were multiple Chucky dolls at the end of Cult of Chucky, so the one found in the yard sale could be tracked down by the returning characters. The original Chucky doll was last seen in the post-credits scene of Cult of Chucky being tortured by Kyle, so it’s very possible the doll seen in the trailer isn’t even the “real” Chucky. It’s still unclear how Chucky will connect new characters and returning characters from Cult of Chucky, but fans can rest easy knowing Mancini is helming the project.
