Blacksad, The Original Zootopia, is Getting a New English Volume

Movies

Blacksad, a crime drama featuring animals that came out long before Zootopia, will have a newly translated volume released. Blacksad: They All Fall Down Part 1 will be the latest Blacksad story, coming shortly after the character’s twentieth anniversary. Blacksad’s newest adventure is sure to be one worth noting.

Blacksad is a detective noir comic that has had five volumes. Written for a French audience, these stories have since found global acclaim with numerous translations being published – including English. The first volume was published in 2000, but Blacksad’s adventures have not stopped since – even if they’ve taken some time to be told. The last title, Blacksad: Amarillo, was published in 2014.

The Beat released a preview of the sixth Blacksad story, Blacksad: They All Fall Down, which will be released in two parts by Europe Comics. Written by Juan Díaz Canales with art by Juanjo Guarnido, the first part will release digitally on October 20 of this year. As usual, it will follow Blacksad, a private investigator who is a cat. It appears that this story will also feature his sidekick, Weeks, who debuted in the second volume of the series, Blacksad: Arctic Nation. The preview for the newest volume was included in Special Edition: What’s News, a short behind-the-scenes look at Blacksad’s upcoming adventure, along with insight from the series’ creators. Check out the preview here:

Trouble has a tendency of finding Blacksad, which seems to be the case in this sepia-toned preview. It’s worth noting that the colors will likely change when the volume releases to match the rest of the series. This sneak peek is directly themed to the What’s News publication that Weeks works for, making it an extra interesting one that creatively replicates a periodical. In this preview, Blacksad is attending Shakespeare in the Park when the production finds itself interrupted by local law enforcement at the urging of the mayor.

After seven years, it is exciting to see a new Blacksad story. The first volume releases digitally this year and will be available for print purchase in 2022. The second volume will be published in 2023. While there will be a wait to complete the story, this means that fans of Blacksad will have plenty to look forward to in the next couple of years. Blacksad has cracked cases in numerous iconic locations including Las Vegas and New Orleans. Now, he will be in New York City. According to The Beat, he will be dealing with “nefarious goings-on with unions, organized crime, and the dark parts of the city, including Solomon, a construction magnate with many plans for the city.” Once more Blacksad will be taking on a powerful foe with high connections, as he has done repeatedly in the past.

These graphic novels predated Disney’s Zootopia, but the resemblance is easily noticeable – and with good reason. Both stories deal with crime and use anthropomorphic characters to dive into heavy themes. Additionally, Juanjo Guardino, the artist of the series, used to work for the French branch of Walt Disney Animation, until it closed in 2003. However, this doesn’t make Blacksad suitable for families. This series is largely in the vein of traditional noir, with gritty dealings in the underbelly of cities. It never shies away from sex, drugs, murder, racism, or corruption. This newest volume likely won’t either, making it a perfect fit for Disney art style fans wanting a mature story in the noir tradition – an unexpected, but enjoyable combination. Blacksad is making his return and thus far, the latest story seems to be promising. Blacksad: They All Fall Down Part 1 from Europe Comics releases digitally on October 20, 2021.
