Tom Holland’s First Movie Co-Star Reacts To Spider-Man Success

Movies

Naomi Watts, Tom Holland’s co-star from his first movie, The Impossible, has reacted to the actor’s worldwide success as the latest Spider-Man. After two solo movies (and several team-up films) with Marvel Studios as the web-slinger, Holland most recently starred in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which quickly became critically acclaimed and another hit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was globally released on December 17, 2021, and was the first to feature all three actors who have played Spider-Man in live-action on the big screen: Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is the 27th film in the MCU and follows Peter Parker shortly after his identity is leaked to the public, forcing him to track down the elusive Doctor Strange and persuade him to cast a spell that has world-breaking repercussions, including opening up the multiverse. Alongside Holland, Garfield, and Maguire, the film also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Marisa Tomei, and Benedict Wong.

In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, Watts commented on Holland’s profound success within the industry, both inside and outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and expressed her support of him. Specifically, the actress spoke about her early belief that he would go far in his career and the strong support that his family has given him. Read Watts’ comments below:

[It’s] so wonderful. I’m so happy for him. I always knew that Tom would go on and have a pretty outstanding career. I didn’t think of Spider-Man [Laughs]. That’s just, you know, not something that came to mind, but I knew that he had all of the goods. This was a kid who was doing his first movie, had unbelievable access to emotions, had great discipline and whether or not that comes from his dance and athletic background, I don’t know, but he had a really great family too. They’re a really solid team of people there supporting him.

The Impossible was released in 2012 and, as previously mentioned, was Holland’s first major film role. The disaster film was based on the story of one family who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami tragedy and ultimately received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike, with many of the survivors of the real-life event feeling it was a strong representation of what they went through. The film was an immediate boost for Holland, already garnering praise for his acting skills.

This latest look back on the young actor’s ever-growing career highlights how far he has come. From a small theatre actor with minor film roles to a global superstar who is headlining as one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes, Holland’s success shows no signs of stopping. Spider-Man: No Way Home hits VOD on March 22.
