Supermassive Games Working On Next Horror Project, Due Out in 2025 or 2026

Supermassive Games is diving once again into horror with its upcoming project, which will no doubt please fans of their recent efforts in The Quarry, and in the ongoing The Dark Pictures Anthology.

Speaking with Video Games Chronicle, Supermassive Games studio director Will Byles stated that the team’s next horror project will be about the same scale as The Quarry, with a targeted release of 2025 or 2026. “We’ve started working on [the next game]. I can’t really tell you very much at all about it, but we have started. Again, it’s the same sort of horror genre, we’re sticking to that. It’s equivalent in size to The Quarry… and that’s about as much as I can say without giving too much away.”

Byles did allude to what can be seen as a departure from what Supermassive Games had done with their horror games in the past. “I don’t know how far we can stretch the teen horror thing out further, because especially when we try to stir it up, the number of surprises you can add to that becomes limited. The Dark Pictures explores hundreds of variants of the horror genre. What we’re looking at now, and I can’t tell you exactly what it is, is a bit of a diversion away from that sort of standard, but it’s still very much classic horror.”

And for those that enjoyed seeing genre favourites appear in The Quarry, Byles says that Supermassive is going to do the same with this project. He also believes that it won’t be long before the big-name Hollywood actors join in on the fun.

“I don’t think that’s far off. It’s mostly about the number of days we have them for, because it’s very expensive, and shooting this takes a long time. So that becomes a bit of an issue,” he explained. “Also when you get somebody like Tom Cruise, that becomes what could be a budget of an entire game just on him. So, it will come down to that.”

The Quarry, which includes the likes of Ted Raimi, David Arquette, Lance Henriksen, and Lin Shaye, is out now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One and PC via Steam. The next entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Devil in Me, arrives on November 18th. And check out our recent preview of The Devil in Me.
