After a long battle with illness, it’s been announced this afternoon that the legendary, Emmy-winning actor Donald Sutherland has passed away in Miami, Florida at the age of 88.

Son Kiefer Sutherland writes on Twitter, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Donald Sutherland made a handful of notable pit stops in the horror genre throughout his multi-decade career on the screen, which kicked off back in the early 1960s. Here in the horror world, Sutherland is known for his roles in Don’t Look Now (1973), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and most recently, Stephen King adaptation Mr. Harrigan’s Phone (2022).

Sutherland also starred in films including The Castle of the Living Dead (1964), Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), The Rosary Murders (1987), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Citizen X (1995), Fallen (1998), Virus (1999), Salem’s Lot (2004), and An American Haunting (2005).

Sutherland lent his one of a kind gravitas to countless other notable projects throughout his career, including The Dirty Dozen, Klute, The Day of the Locust, The Kentucky Fried Movie, Animal House, Murder by Decree, Backdraft, JFK, Six Degrees of Separation, Outbreak, A Time to Kill, Space Cowboys, “Frankenstein” (2004), and The Hunger Games franchise.

Deadline notes this afternoon, “Donald Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette; sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus, and Kiefer; daughter Rachel; and four grandchildren.”
