Psychic Software and Spiderwinkle Games have announced that their top-down gothic RPG The Necromancer’s Tale will officially launch on July 17thfor PC via Steam, with a console coming at a later date. To mark the occasion, the team has released a brand-new release date trailer and an in-depth, narrated 7-minute overview covering the core mechanics, combat, and systems behind this unique necromantic experience.

The demo for The Necromancer’s Tale, which was updated earlier this month to include a dungeon-crawl from mid-game, is still available ahead of the game’s launch.

Set in an 18th-century alt-history version of Italy, The Necromancer’s Tale offers players a richly layered narrative focused on the dark path of necromancy – not as a power fantasy, but as a descent into moral compromise, secrecy, and transformation. You play as a minor noble with an unusual gift, pulled into the hidden world of death magic and the political machinations it fuels.

With a narrative that draws inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and inspired by the narrative depth of Disco Elysiumand the strategic design of Pillars of Eternity, this dark origin story is touted as the first of its kind to explore what it truly means to become a necromancer.

“We didn’t want to create a hero’s tale, we wanted to give players the freedom to write their own descent. Whether you become a savior, a tyrant, or something worse… that’s entirely up to you,” explains Game Director Sam Redfern and Marketing Director Kirsty Halloran.
