She’s got, she’s got a way! Chappell Roan shoots to UK number one with The Subway

All aboard! Chappell Roan has officially secured a UK number one with her iconic sapphic breakup anthem “The Subway.”

After releasing the highly-anticipated single and music video, which she has been performing live since 2024, on Friday (1 August), “The Subway” has now officially reached number one in the UK singles charts.

Chappell Roan has previously described the heartbreaking ballad as “encompassing everything I love about New York City, with the hope, heartbreak and healing that it has to offer us all.”

This marks the singer’s second number one hit in the UK, with “Pink Pony Club” reaching the top spot in March – five years after its release. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old singer’s country-tinged dom top banger “The Giver” peaked at number two in March.

Over in the UK album charts, sapphic artists are also dominating, with Chappell Roan’s debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess reaching number 12, and Reneé Rapp’s BITE ME securing the top spot.

Sadly, despite the success of “The Subway”, Chappell Roan has confirmed that she won’t be releasing a new album any time soon.

The Grammy-winning musician explained in an interview that a second album does not yet exist, and she will not be rushing the creative process.

“The second project doesn’t exist yet,” Roan told Vogue in an interview on Monday (4 August). “There is no album. There is no collection of songs.”

She added that it took her five years to write The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and “it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next. I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out.”

Chappell Roan added: “I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything. I see somecomments sometimes, like, ‘She’s everywhere except that damn studio.’ Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.”

The singer recently announced that she will be doing a pop-up tour in New York, Kansas City, and Los Angeles this autumn, with a portion of the proceeds going towards trans youth charities.
