Batwoman star Ruby Rose has revealed she needed emergency neck surgery after a stunt accident left her with two herniated discs that nearly severed her spinal cord.
A herniated disc occurs when the rubbery disc between the spinal vertebrae ruptures or bulges out. Left untreated, a herniated disc in the wrong part of your spine can lead to chronic nerve damage or paralysis.
The actress, model and DJ revealed that she was in chronic pain before the surgery and could not feel her arms.
On Friday, September 27, she shared a graphic video of the critical operation on Instagram alongside the caption: “Well that was fun.” But be warned… it’s not for the squeamish.
She told fans: “To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck… A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralysed… I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal cord.
“I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms… Thank you Dr Bray for everything you did and for allowing me to keep working and doing what I love. I am forever in your debt.”
It’s not everyday you undergo complex spinal surgery, and Rose didn’t want to miss a second of it.
She joked: “To anyone asking why I let them video it… Did you not watch that Greys anatomy episode where they left a towel in a patient?? Also I wanted to see what happens when we go under.”
It’s not the first time the Orange is the New Black star has gone under the knife. In 2018 she revealed that she had been suffering from a spinal condition for the past 10 years and needed spinal surgery to address it.
After surgery, Ruby Rose simply incorporated her new walking cane as part of her signature style.
