According to the traditional Chinese calendar, January 25 marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year and the start of the Year of the Rat. To celebrate, Gucci has unveiled a very literal collection featuring the most famous rodent of the world: Mickey Mouse. Titled the ‘Year of the Mouse,’ the vast collection from creative director Alessandro Michele consists of ready-to-wear, accessories, bags, and shoes, all emblazoned with the iconic Disney star.
Michele’s whimsical aesthetic lends itself well to the fantasy world of Mickey & friends. Naturally, they staged the campaign at Disneyland. Photographer and director Harmony Korine shot Gucci ambassador and actress Ni Ni, actor Earl Cave and designer, stylist and poet Zoë Bleu at the happiest place on earth. They hung out with Mickey Mouse in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle, got locked up in jail in Toontown, snd spun around in tea cups while wearing Gucci cardigans.
This is isn’t the first time Gucci teamed up with one of the world’s most recognizable characters. The designer sent a $4,5000 3D-printed Mickey Mouse bag down the runway of their spring’s 2019 collection in celebration of the cartoon’s 90th birthday. Disney is no stranger to partnering with fashion bigwigs either. In the past, Disney teamed up with Rag & Bone, Opening Ceremony, Levi’s, and more.
Now that NYE is over, celebrate yet another new year in style with Gucci’s new collection. It launches in-stores and online on January 3, 2020 at Gucci and select retailers worldwide.
