Saara and Meri Aalto got married in Helsinki, Finland.

Saara Aalto has married her partner Meri Sopanen, now Meri Aalto, her wife, in an intimate ceremony after a three-and-a-half year engagement.

The Finnish singer-songwriter and her partner had planned a beautiful wedding for this summer, but the event had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The couple realised that despite a wedding with family and friends being off the table, they still wanted to tie the knot, so they decided to hold a private registry in Helsinki.

Saara, who has competed on Dancing On Ice, X Factor and Eurovision, said: “With all of us feeling so much anxiety and uncertainty right now, Meri and I wanted to celebrate love and put something positive out into the world.

“When we had to postpone the wedding we were heartbroken, but then we realised we could still hold a private registration and celebrate our love together.

“It was the perfect moment.”

The couple plan to hold a full ceremony with family and friends at a later date.

Saara Aalto will celebrate her wedding and her birthday with a livestream concert.

Saara Aalto will turn 33 on Saturday, May 2, and to celebrate her wedding and birthday she will hold a livestream concert for fans.

“Queens Live” will be streamed via Facebook Live on Friday (May 1) at 7pm.

“This livestream concert is the perfect opportunity for me to commemorate something so special and mark the occasion with everybody who has supported me publicly for so many years,” she said.

The singer and queer activist is also offering a special opportunity to her fans with budding music careers by launching the “No Fear School” singing masterclass.

The five-week masterclass allows fans to be trained by Aalto herself, and will help them to develop basic singing technique, tools to find their own voice and widen their range, and an understanding of how to use their voices in different genres.
