Deadpool has just been transformed into a new villain in a drastically changed Marvel universe, as he’s taken elements from both the Joker and Harley Quinn. In Heroes Reborn: Young Squadron, the titular heroes are ambushed by Deadpool, who shows he’s become a mixture of two of DC’s most iconic characters.
Marvel Comics’ Heroes Reborn event hasn’t been particularly subtle about doing their own takes on characters from the DC Comics Universe. The Squadron Supreme – Marvel’s pastiches of the Justice League – are the most powerful heroes in a world that has been changed by Mephisto where the Avengers don’t exist. Gwen Stacy has become Nightbird (Batgirl), Nova has been turned into Kid Spectrum (Green Lantern), while Hulk has effectively become the universe’s Bizzaro. Marvel has even mocked the Death of Superman with fake fan letters. Now, Marvel has revealed what’s happened to the Merc with a Mouth.

In Heroes Reborn: Young Squadron #1 by Jim Zub, Steven Cummings, Erick Arciniega, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, readers are introduced to the universe’s youngest superteam – all of who are younger versions of the Squadron Supreme. The team fights against the Wrecking Crew, but the battle is interrupted when a gas canister is thrown. Deadpool emerges from the smoke, knocks out Falcon with his mallet, and takes him away.
Deadpool is essentially Marvel’s version of Harley Quinn with a dash of the Joker. With a mallet and diamond-shaped eyes on his mask, Deadpool has some features of Harley, and he even speaks like her. However, when he brings Falcon to an abandoned theme park, he reveals his sinister plan. He believes he needs to kill the Falcon to break Nighthawk (Marvel’s pastiche of Batman) in a moment that’s somewhat reminiscent of Death in the Family. Thankfully, Power Princess and Kid Spectrum stop Deadpool, causing him to begin yelling at the narrator of the story, who suggests he’s going to the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane. The story ends with Nighthawk looking for Falcon and the Young Squadron realizing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes aren’t what they are cracked up to me.
While Deadpool isn’t an exact carbon copy of the Joker and Harley Quinn in the Heroes Reborn universe, he certainly borrows enough elements from the two DC Comics characters that it’s clear this take was inspired by them. Still, this version of Deadpool is very much the Merc with the Mouth as he never stops talking right until he’s taken away by Nighthawk. Heroes Reborn: The Young Squadron is in stores now.
