What got you into music?
I would say the most important factor is that I am blind and so sound is my universe and music is a beautiful way to fill that universe. I also feel like music is a natural extension of my spirit, so making music is just something that I feel compelled to do, it is no different than the need to breathe or eat.
I also grew up with a lot of music in my home from my mom and dad and then one day heard the Beatles. So once I discovered the recording sciences and that I had an aptitude for that, I was off and never looked back!
If you were not a musician, what do you think you would be doing today?
I love history and could see myself teaching history to college students and I also am very much in touch with my inner child, so I would love to make toys! Also, I love science and wouldn’t mind being a physicist!
Do you feel like where you are from influences your music?
Oh yeah, here in Macon, GA, where I also serve as the official music ambassador, the “Southern Sound” is very much a part of the material makeup of the musical air we breathe here. Bands like the Allman Brothers, Little Richard, Otis Redding, James Brown and R.E.M. have a great influence.
That being said, I don’t sound like any of those, but in ways both subtle and profound, southern artists are part of my DNA. But, of course so are artists like Miles Davis, The Beatles and Nirvana!
How long has music been your career?
Since I was about 19 years old I started getting paid for my work and I am now in my 40’s, so a long time. But, it has been an obsession for longer, since I was about 6 years old, though I didn’t start studying music or playing until I was about 17 years old. The reason for this late start is the brain tumor that took my eyesight. Most of my early years were focused on survival and just trying to go to school.
What would you say is the most rewarding part of what you do?
Guiding others on their musical journey.
I teach at 2 universities and also work full time as a producer and recording engineer and I love assisting folks to maximize their potential and provide them with an uplifting experience!
What can we expect from you in the upcoming months? Any fun projects we should be on the lookout for?
My next full-length album “One Song At A Time” will be out next year when it is safe to tour again, whenever that is. As a brain tumor survivor, I have to guard my health very carefully and I have a team of medical professionals that assist me with making those decisions.
However, I am doing a Christmas concert on Facebook Live on 12/3 at 7pm EST www.facebook.com/joeystuckey and also around Thanksgiving will have my Christmas single out. It is my version of “Jingle Bells”!
