As we reported at the start of this week, Parker Finn‘s Smile had an incredible second weekend at the domestic box office, nearly matching its opening weekend take and scaring up an additional $19 million across its second weekend. And the news gets even better for Paramount, as we’ve learned that Smile has now officially passed $100 million worldwide!
Deadline notes, “Through Tuesday, the gross is $102.3M worldwide, made up of $55.5M domestic and $46.8M from the international box office.”
Smile remains at the top of the box office charts as we head into the film’s third weekend in theaters, where it will play alongside Halloween Ends and our own Terrifier 2.
Brian Robbins, CEO and President of Paramount Pictures, said in a statement this afternoon, “The moment we saw this film we knew it had immense cinematic potential, and we’re beyond thrilled and proud to see that audiences around the world agree wholeheartedly and are turning out in record numbers. Thank you to our director, Parker Finn, our creative partners and our production team for delivering a fantastically terrifying movie; and thank you to our global marketing and distributions teams for hitting it out of the park once again.”
The reported production budget for Smile was $17 million, which means Paramount Pictures has already far surpassed the point of profitability for their latest theatrical horror outing.
In the film, “After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain.
“As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”
Smile also stars Jesse T Usher (“The Boys”), Kal Penn, Rob Morgan (“Stranger Things”), Kyle Gallner (Scream 2022), and Caitlin Stasey (All Cheerleaders Die).
Meagan wrote in her Smile review for BD, “There’s a familiarity to the curse’s nature and formula, drawing easy comparisons to several beloved horror films. Even still, it’s well crafted and introduces a fresh feeling mythology, with some genuine scares along the way. Smile makes for a solid enough crowd pleaser heading into the Halloween season.”
