Stephen King recently opened up his concerns surrounding Pluribus‘ future on Apple TV, and it is hard not to agree with him.

Despite taking a slow-burn approach towards storytelling and leaving many overarching questions unanswered in its first installment, Pluribus has become Apple TV’s most-watched show. It has also achieved the impressive feat of earning an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%. Its next installment is highly anticipated, but its future already faces a massive challenge.

As Stephen King pointed out in one of his recent social media posts, Vince Gilligan’s plans for Pluribus‘ future could spell trouble for the Apple TV sci-fi show.

After learning that Vince Gilligan is in no hurry to start Pluribus season 2‘s production, Stephen King expressed his concerns by posting this on X:

Stephen King’s complaint makes sense given how we live in a strange time when we might not even live long enough to be able to watch a show’s entire run. Some shows leave as many as 4–5 years between seasons, which not only stretches the viewer’s patience but also makes them wonder if holding on to a story for so long is worth it.

Vince Gilligan’s desire to not rush Pluribus and take his time with the show’s next installment makes sense from a creative standpoint. He seemingly wants to focus on quality instead of quantity. However, prolonged waiting periods between seasons can also be detrimental to a show, regardless of how well it rewards patient viewers.

Extended Gaps Between Seasons Can Seriously Harm Shows Like Pluribus

Pluribus takes a slow-burn approach in season 1 and only scratches the surface of its true storytelling scale. Vince Gilligan has a four-season plan for the Apple TV sci-fi series, which makes sense after season 1. However, if Pluribus season 2 takes too long to come out, audiences might struggle to stay invested in the show’s story.

As much as I enjoyed Pluribus‘ emphasis on slow storytelling, I cannot deny that season 1 did not give me a lot to hold on to.

Although Pluribus season 1 does a brilliant job of capturing what Vince Gilligan has in store for audiences, it delays the larger payoff. Owing to this, season 2 has the perfect opportunity to riff on season 1’s solid momentum by releasing on time. But if it fails to do this, it might not only end up undercutting the goodwill season 1 worked so hard to build but also, as Stephen King suggested, lose many viewers.
