One of Deadpool & Wolverine’s best jokes has become a lot more literal in 2026 with Avengers: Doomsday. When a gag about Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and his age is applied to two other new MCU actors, the joke remarkably becomes even more true.

At the end of 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will be bringing back several legacy actors, many of whom do not originate from the main MCU timeline itself. This includes two of the oldest working Marvel actors to date, making Deadpool & Wolverine’s joke in 2024 much more of an impressive reality.

One of Deadpool’s Best Jokes Was About Hugh Jackman’s 26-Year Career as Wolverine

One of Deadpool & Wolverine’s funniest gags comes from some meta-commentary on Hugh Jackman’s longevity as Wolverine, directly referencing Jackman’s return and highlighting his remarkable run as Logan for over two decades. According to Deadpool, Marvel Studios is going to make Jackman play Wolverine “Till he’s 90.

Jackman was 32 when he first played Wolverine in 2000’s X-Men, meaning he’s currently 57 years old. His 26-year career playing such a beloved Marvel superhero is quite the testament, and there are hopes we’ll see him before the end of the Multiverse Saga. However, the Wolverine joke gets a lot more literal with two upcoming MCU actors starring in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday Makes The Joke A Near-Reality With Ian McKellen’s Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier

Avengers: Doomsday will see the return of Sir Ian McKellen’s Magneto and Sir Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, alongside a handful of other actors who previously played X-Men in Fox’s universe. By the film’s December release, McKellen will be 87 while Stewart will be 86.

Both Marvel actors debuted in 2000’s X-Men as well, giving them just as long careers as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Suddenly, Deadpool’s quip about playing superheroes into old age doesn’t sound far-fetched at all.

Even beyond superhero cinema, it was just reported that McKellen is also set to return as Gandalf the Grey in the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum.

Patrick Stewart as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday

All that said, Avengers: Doomsday (and possibly Secret Wars) will likely be McKellen and Stewart’s final bow for their iconic X-Men characters, especially with Marvel Studios reportedly planning its own X-Men reboot once the Multiverse Saga comes to an end.

One can only hope that Avengers: Doomsday will give McKellen and Stewart the send-off they and their legacy characters very much deserve.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on December 18th from Marvel Studios.
