Cyberpunk 2077 Finally Goes Gold 8 Years After It Was First Announced

The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt Red has officially announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has finally gone gold after it was initially revealed eight years ago. The news effectively confirms the studio’s recent promise that the game won’t be delayed again.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been postponed a few times, which was somewhat understandable given the scale and the overall ambitiousness of the project. Even with the latest release date set to November 17, there were cautious talks among gamers that CD Projekt Red might revise the schedule once again. Back at the beginning of September, the studio made a promise to avoid delaying the game any further – no matter what. Despite the numerous development challenges including remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team was determined to make Cyberpunk fans happy in time, but the developers on the ground are undoubtedly suffering the cost of the studio’s explicit and ongoing crunch period.

The recent announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 going gold is the final and most convincing indicator that the game will be delivered according to its currently set November schedule. The exciting reveal is accompanied by a breathtaking image of Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand holding a golden physical copy of Cyberpunk 2077 in his non-silver hand. Basically, it all means that there won’t be any delays as disk manufacturers have received legitimately certified versions of the game accepted by platform holders at Sony and Microsoft. Now is arguably the perfect time to make pre-orders for those who fancy securing guaranteed copies of video games as there’re literally no obstacles left.

That being said, CD Projekt Red’s promise to avoid any potential delays cost the development team healthy working conditions. According to the officially released statement, the studio had to abandon its “no crunch” policy in order to boost the process of polishing and bug fixing so that it could be completed in time. Despite being an exhaustingly challenging and ambitious project, Cyberpunk 2077 will still have a slightly shorter story campaign compared to The Witcher 3. The developer already has plans to support the game with additional content and expand the narrative further delving into the rich lore of the Cyberpunk world, however.

While CD Project Red has solidified the upcoming release date of Cyberpunk 2077, which is undoubtedly an inspiring piece of news, the work on the game continues. This situation likely suggests that the title will receive a massive Day 1 patch once it launches in November, and the game might very well be unplayable until it is updated. Hopefully, the developer has enough time left to incorporate any necessary fixes and changes while incurring as little human cost as possible.
