PS5 Doesn’t Support 1440p Due To TVs Taking Priority Over Monitors

People around the world who are eagerly awaiting the release of the Playstation 5 may find themselves disappointed at the lack of support for 1440p monitors. Players may get excited at the PS5’s capabilities, with confirmations that graphics and loading times for games like Genshin Impact will be far faster. The PS5 looks to be faster, stronger, and better than its previous console based on early reviews. With the release date being set to November 12, fans are on the edge of their seats with more being revealed about the console.

Sony saw major success with PS5 pre-orders, amassing an audience through its many features. Japan’s pre-orders sold out almost immediately, showing how many people wanted the next-generation console. Sony released a trailer just ahead of launch focusing on the massive collection of games available to the PS5. With games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales utilizing the full graphics potential that the PS5 has to offer, any small or old monitor simply won’t do. With many new games having state-of-the-art graphics, it only makes sense why people would want to view them on the highest-resolution monitors.

In an interview with Japanese site Impress, translated and reposted to Resetera, PlayStation manager Hideaki Nishino reveals that the PS5’s lack of support for 1440p monitors is due to the company prioritizing output to TVs, which generally don’t have 1440p settings. Nishino stated that while the PS5 does not have support for 1440p right now, it may come in the future if the market demands it. Nishino says Sony is keeping an eye on trends, and with enough requests, support for the less popular resolution could be added. This was not the only let down, since fans of VR may also be disappointed to hear that PS5 games are not compatible with PSVR; only PS4 version of the games will work.

While it is mentioned that 1440p support isn’t guaranteed, Nishino makes another statement regarding virtual reality. In the same interview, Nishino hinted that the PSVR may have an upcoming successor, intended to further improve the current VR experience. With enough feedback, people may find support for their 1440 screens, as well as a potentially even better VR headset.

While the PS5’s release isn’t perfect, this only proves how important user feedback is for companies. It is impossible for a console to be perfect, so it is the user’s job to let Sony know what they want. Sony keeping an open ear to the public is how the PlayStation 5 will improve, and with time, even relatively niche concerns could be heard.
