Potential spoilers for Star Wars #11 ahead!

Lando Calrissian’s loyal right-hand man Lobot has had his hands full with the Rebellion. First, they liberated him from the Empire’s clutches on Bespin, and more recently, he helped the Rebellion establish contact with an ancient protocol droid; but now, in a special preview of Star Wars #11, it looks as if no good deed goes unpunished as Lobot is fighting for his life, and the Rebellion may just let him go. The issue, written by Charles Soule with art by Oscar Bazaldua and colors by Frank D’Armata, will be in stores and on all digital comics platforms February 3.

Despite very little screen time in The Empire Strikes Back, Lobot has become something of a cult figure in fan circles. A cybernetically-enhanced human, Lobot assisted Lando Calrissian in the day-to-day administration of Cloud City. He was taken prisoner when the Empire captured the city, but a Lando-led mission rescued him. Now Lobot is assisting the Rebellion by using his cybernetic implants to communicate with a millennia-old protocol droid. The Rebels hope to use the droid’s knowledge of dead languages to create a code the Empire cannot break.

Thanks to Lobot, the Rebels were successful in opening communications with the droid, but there is an unfortunate side effect: the stress of opening and maintaining the line of communication is killing Lobot. Lando realizes this and asks the Rebels to break the line, but Leia and the others want to keep it open. He protests, but Leia overrides him, telling Lando the fate of the galaxy is more important than the life of one person; to keep Lando from trying anything else, Kes Dameron pulls a blaster on him.

The preview pages provided do not reveal the ultimate fate of Lobot, but it is worth noting that Lobot makes no further on-screen appearances in the Star Wars universe beyond The Empire Strikes Back, so this very well could be the end of the line for the character. What is clear in the preview, however, is that Lando is deeply loyal to Lobot, willing to put Lobot’s well-being ahead of that of his friends. Keep in mind all of this is happening not long into Lando’s time with the Rebellion, so he may not trust them completely.

Will Lobot sacrifice himself for the Rebellion? And if Lobot is to survive, will this encounter leave him permanently damaged? Lobot has proven to be an enduring character in the Star Wars mythos, but now it looks as if it is the end of the road for him, and fans will learn his ultimate fate in Star Wars #11.
