Marvel Writer Admits 2020 Made Them Write More Positive Stories

Movies

It’s been a hard year for the world as a whole, with plenty of heaviness to go around thanks to the global pandemic, but it’s because of this that a certain Marvel writer has been driven to write more positive stories: starting with Guardians of the Galaxy. Popular comic book writer Al Ewing is taking the opportunity to make the cosmic group a more official superhero team in an attempt to take their story somewhere “brighter and more positive.”

Normally comic book stories tend to have an air of heaviness and drama to them, an edge that tends to draw people in; but with Covid-19 the world has been living through more collective trauma than possibly ever before. This year has also seen a huge divide among people with anger and hatred taking up more and more space. So, it makes sense that both readers and writers alike have been craving more glimpses of positivity, more uplifting stories, and excitement after a dreary year in lockdown captivity. And it looks like with the new Guardians storyline, readers might get to see just that.

Covid-19 disrupted the comics industry a lot in terms of production, release timelines, and more; but it wasn’t just the comics industry that was hit, it was the world as a whole. So, it’s understandable that by now, a well-known writer like Ewing has become aware of how refreshing it could be for readers to get an opportunity to escape it all, and not have to deal with the doom and gloom of the world. Many forms of media have used the pandemic as inspiration, or played off themes of the harsh reality everyone has been facing; but for so many people, entertainment is their way of escapism. So why not create a story that touches on an exciting kind of tension… instead of an anxiety-producing one? Ewing explained in a press release that this new Guardians storyline will be “a way to change things up a little, to raise the stakes and the tension,” and that “originally this was all heading to a darker place, but – possibly because the world’s endured enough darkness recently – once I was in the thick of it, I ended up tacking towards something brighter and more positive, and that led to the idea of the Guardians as a superhero team in a more official capacity.” See the full team lineup and get the first glimpse of their new adventures in the Guardians of the Galaxy #13 trailer below!

Guardians of the Galaxy #13 will not only be a milestone 175th legacy issue but will feature a dynamic roster of characters to usher in a new space age for Marvel. They’ll be taking on the capacity as a sort of “Space Avengers to counter the Space X-Men.” The new team will include both classic Guardians heroes like Nova, Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot, as well as some familiar new recruits that include the likes of Wiccan, Hulkling, Quasar, and Dr. Doom. Juan Frigeri’s artistic talents will help bring these characters to life and support Ewing’s attempt at supplying readers with more positivity through an action-packed Marvel storyline that will hopefully feature more heart than it does darkness.

Guardians of the Galaxy #13 will be on sale come April 14th. Readers will have to wait until then to “blast off with the Galaxy’s Mightiest Heroes.” For now, they are just going to have to find their sources of positivity and outlets for escapism elsewhere.
