How Loki’s Sophia Di Martino Felt Dressing Up As Sylvie For the First Time

Movies

Sylvie actress Sophia Di Martino revealed that something came over her when she put on her character’s costume for the first time during production of Loki. Perhaps the most exciting new character to be introduced in the latest Marvel Disney+ series, Sylvie was revealed as the dangerous Loki Variant terrorizing the Time Variance Authority at the end of episode 2. Her ultimate goal was to disrupt the Sacred Timeline by creating enough Nexus events that it would be unmanageable by the TVA. The status of Sylvie’s mission is unclear as she’s gotten wrapped up in a different adventure, though.

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki joined forces with Sylvie as a way to avoid being stuck at the TVA. So far, their journey has taken them to the moon Lamentis-1 as it was on the brink of destruction. In episode 4, Loki and Sylvie return to the TVA as a last resort before Loki is ultimately “pruned” by Judge Renslayer and Sylvie is left to grapple with the fact that the Time-Keepers are just robots. What’s up next is anyone’s guess, but Sylvie will likely play a key part in the final two episodes and now that she’s back in action, a new kind of Sylvie may come out.

One of the most distinct things about the character is her costume, including a black jumpsuit reminiscent of Loki’s own costume. Sylvie even has a horned crown, although one of her horns is broken off. Now, Di Martino has told ET what it felt like to put on this costume for the first time, saying that she finally felt like Sylvie when trying it on during the early days of filming. The actress says that “something happens” when she puts on the costume and “Sylvie comes out.”

It felt pretty good. You know, I felt like, ‘Yeah, okay, now I’m Sylvie. Watch out. Stay out of my way.’ I think something happens when I put the outfit on and it’s definitely the icing on the cake for me acting wise. Something happens and Sylvie comes out.

Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie in Loki episode 2

There’s clearly nothing quite like getting fully into the role of a superhero by putting on the costume for the first time. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu revealed that he had quite an emotional reaction the first time he put on his suit. It certainly sounds like something similar happened with Di Martino, who has never had a role quite like Sylvie in her career. That the actress says “something comes out” when she puts on the costume makes it clear that the role is quite important and it shows.

Di Martino’s performance opposite Hiddleston has been a wonder to watch and it’s easy to imagine that Marvel may keep her around for a long time. Although Di Martino is unsure about Sylvie’s MCU futureLoki is reportedly already getting a second season. It would seem natural for the character to show up there, but it’s clear from the implications of the series that it wouldn’t be impossible for her to pop up in various other projects.
