Queer TV chef Anne Burrell’s cause of death has been revealed

The cause of death of LGBTQ+ Food Network star Anne Burrell, who died aged 55. Burrell was found dead at her home in Brooklyn on 17 June. As reported by People, it has been confirmed that she died by suicide.

After Anne Burrell was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at her home, her cause of death was determined by the New York City medical examiner’s office, to be “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.”

Diphenhydramine and cetirizine are antihistamines, ethanol is a compound found in alcohol and amphetamine is commonly used to treat ADHD.

The New York Times reported, citing an internal New York Police Department document, that the Food Network star was “discovered in the shower unconscious and unresponsive surrounded by approximately (100) assorted pills”.

‘Her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal’

In their statement, Anne Burrell’s family said: “Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend – her smile lit up every room she entered.

“Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”

Burrell was best known in the US as a co-host of Worst Cooks in America, which she appeared on for 27 seasons between 2010 and 2024. Earlier this year, the show returned for its first season without Burrell.

She also led the Emmy-nominated Secrets of a Restaurant Chef for nine seasons between 2008 and 2012.
