Filming is back on track for Stephen Amell’s reboot of an iconic show from the 1990s.

Amell is best known for playing Oliver Queen in CW’s Arrow, which ran for eight seasons. Its success launched numerous Arrowverse TV shows, most of which featured Oliver at various points and in crossover episodes across the interconnected universe of DC superheroes. Amell also played the lead roles in Heels and the short-lived spinoff Suits LA, and had the part of Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Amell’s latest project is playing Hobie Buchannan, the son of David Hasselhoff’s Mitch Buchannan, in Fox’s Baywatch reboot that has resumed filming after facing some setbacks. The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, shared on X that the series will continue to film at the city’s Venice Beach, emphasizing that her office worked with City Council member Traci Park to remove obstacles that were making the production challenging, including making parking easier and more affordable. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Baywatch now has a $21 million dollar tax credit to continue filming in Los Angeles as well. Check out Mayor Bass’ comments below:

I’m pleased that Baywatch will continue to film right here on Venice Beach. When I heard there were issues with Baywatch filming in Los Angeles, my Office took immediate action with Councilmember Park to clear any City-related barriers, including making parking easier and more affordable for the production.

This was a team effort, among my Office, Councilmember Park’s Office, the County, Coastal Commission, Fremantle and FOX, and I’m thankful for this continued partnership.

The City of Los Angeles will always clear bureaucratic barriers, making it easier and more affordable to film in the entertainment capital of the world.

With an increasing number of movie and television productions opting to film in locations outside of Los Angeles, keeping Baywatch there is an important win for the city. It is especially important for the reboot considering that the story takes place in Los Angeles, as did the original show, which was also filmed on the city’s beaches. In addition to Venice Beach, the reboot’s production will take place at Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach and the Fox lot at Century City.

In terms of the story, Amell’s character, Hobie, is not the only member of the Buchannan family in the new Baywatch, as his character has a biological daughter named Charlie Vale (Jessica Belkin). She leaves a complicated home life in Texas and comes to Los Angeles, intending to become a Baywatch lifeguard like her father. Another character with an important connection to the original show is Cody Madison, with David Chokachi reprising the role that he played in seasons 6–9. He is so far the only original cast member returning for the reboot.

Other characters include Hobie’s close friend Nat (Hassie Harrison), rookie lifeguard Luke (Noah Beck), former lawyer and now aspiring lifeguard Trina (Shay Mitchell), former marine and now lifeguard Brad (Thaddeus LaGrone), enthusiastic junior lifeguard Grace (Olivia Dunne), and Zuma Beach lifeguard captain Selene (Brooks Nader). Images have already come out of some of the actors in Baywatch‘s iconic red swimsuits.

Amell, Belkin, Chokachi, and the rest of the actors are providing a new take after the 2017 Baywatch movie’s cast did so. The film featured Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jon Bass, and Kelly Rohrbach as C.J. Parker. Johnson played Mitch while Rohrbach played C.J., the role famously portrayed by Pamela Anderson in the original series.

Baywatch is scheduled to debut as part of the 2026-2027 network television season, which for Fox already includes the renewed Memory of a Killer, Best Medicine, Doc, and Animal Control. Burn Notice creator Matt Nix serves as the showrunner of Baywatch and is an executive producer alongside McG, who will direct the first episode.
