FRIDAY UPDATE: No mushrooms needed to enlarge these plumbers, but for the most part, they’re staying at the same girth from when they pounced around the world three years ago.
Essentially, the global running box office of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has as much rocket fuel as 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie, and that’s a good thing. Current total since Wednesday around the world is $122.1M for the Illumination/Nintendo/Universal title, which is 1.1% ahead of the reported global haul of Super Mario Bros at the same point in time (that counted $120.7M from its Wednesday and Thursday). International alone for the first two days of the sequel is $63M, on par with the first movie. Thursday overseas at 78 markets was $27.9M; Super Mario Bros reported $27.6M. As we told you earlier this morning, domestic stands at $59.1M.

Several records were broken. Ala the U.S. and Canada, Mario’s legacy as a console game translates at the box office, hence robust tickets sales for most of Europe, and Latin America.
No surprise, Mexico with $6.7M scored the biggest Universal opening ever there and the second biggest animated opening ever. The first day beat Super Mario Bros‘ $5.9M, that pic finaling at a reported $85.3M, the second biggest territory for the movie after the $101M+ racked up in Japan (which was the biggest haul for any Uni movie in the country).
UK & Ireland posted $4.3M, which is the second highest single-day preview figure for an animated film in the history of box office on the isle.
Germany’s $3.8M reps the biggest animated opening of all-time and Universal’s biggest opening of all-time. The first movie posted a $2.8M first day.
Spain‘s $3M was the second highest opening day for an animated title of all-time, as well as the 3rd biggest opening day of all-time behindTwilightandInside Out 2. It was also an improvement upon the 2023’s $2.2M Wednesday there.
France‘s $2.9M is the second biggest Illumination opening of all-time (and the biggest outside of holidays).
