Every Yellowstone fan wants a Dutton Ranch and Marshals crossover, and Cole Hauser knows where he wants it to happen if it materializes. Executive produced by Taylor Sheridan and created by Chad Feehan, the highly anticipated Dutton Ranch premieres with two episodes Friday, May 15, on Paramount+.
Dutton Ranch continues Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler’s (Cole Hauser) story after Yellowstone, as the couple stakes their claim on a new ranch in South Texas. Dutton Ranch is the second Yellowstone sequel/spinoff after Marshals on CBS, which tells Kayce Dutton’s (Luke Grimes) adventures in Montana as a member of the U.S. Marshals.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley at Dutton Ranch‘s press junket, Cole Hauser talks about a potential Yellowstone crossover and states his preference for whether it should happen in Montana or Texas. Read Cole’s quote below:
ScreenRant: Everyone wants the Marshals crossover. In the grand Yellowstone universe, people want to see these things interconnect. Would you want it to be in Montana, or would you want Kayce to come over to Texas?
Cole Hauser: I would take a break and go and kick back in the mountains of Montana. I’d love to come up there.
It’s not surprising that Cole Hauser prefers to return to Montana, rather than Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton traveling to the Dutton Ranch in Rio Paloma. Part of the allure of Yellowstone was the majestic and stunning vistas of Montana, where Hauser filmed for five seasons. Relocating to South Texas was a marked change of pace for Hauser as well as Rip and Beth.
Kayce gets to remain in Montana in his spinoff, and Marshals‘ episodes do include sweeping exterior shots of the mountains, rivers, and forests of Big Sky Country. South Texas’ terrain is different and lacks Montana’s mighty mountain ranges, which is part of what Beth, Rip, and their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), have to adjust to in Dutton Ranch.
Marshals has name-dropped Rip and Beth, which keeps the flames of a possible crossover alive. Although Kayce’s show is a network procedural and Dutton Ranch is a prestige streaming series on Paramount+, both are conveniently owned by Paramount Skydance. This makes a Yellowstone crossover a strong possibility, and both series would welcome a Beth, Rip, and Kayce reunion one day.
Marshals is a ratings juggernaut for CBS, which has already renewed Kayce Dutton’s spinoff for season 2. Dutton Ranch is anticipated to be an equal-sized hit on Paramount+, and odds are good Beth and Rip will also get a second season. Perhaps both Yellowstone spinoffs will then pull the trigger on a crossover.
It remains to be seen if Dutton Ranch will return the favor and mention Kayce, but it’s hard to imagine it wouldn’t happen at some point. If a Yellowstone crossover does happen, Kayce could still come to Texas despite Cole Hauser’s wishes to return to Montana.
There’s also no reason why Beth and Rip couldn’t go home to Montana before Kayce checks out their new digs in Dutton Ranch, or vice versa.
