Released back in 2010 as the first installments in Pokémon’s Gen 5, Pokémon Black and White took place in the region of Unova, following the story of a young Pokémon Trainer who must battle others like them in order to get to the bottom of the evil schemes in place by organization Team Plasma.
Introducing 156 new Pokémon to the ever-growing roster, Pokémon Black and White was welcomed with positive reviews, with praise for its brand-new features such as a seasonal cycle, rotation battles, hidden abilities, and more. However, it was also criticized for some of its new Pokémon designs, as well as a lack of innovation compared to some previous installments.
Nevertheless, Pokémon Black and White was still a success, so it is perhaps no wonder that the ROM hack community has used it as the basis for some incredible new releases, including Pokémon Black and White 3: Genesis.
Created by Azure_Keys, Pokémon Black and White 3: Genesis is a hack of Pokémon Crystal Version, yet serves as a sequel to both Pokémon Black and White and Pokémon Black and White 2. Taking place in Unova, a few years after the events of the first two games, players will take on the role of a young Trainer from Humilau City who must embark on a journey around the region “to catch Pokémon, collect Gym badges, and thwart the plans of a mysterious group claiming to be Team Plasma, a terror group that was supposedly disbanded years ago.”
Featuring 252 Pokémon, 255 moves from throughout the first 5 generations, a brand-new Fairy type, an original story, and much more, Pokémon Black and White 3: Genesis is perfect for those who want to experience Pokémon Black and White like they have never seen it before.
That is certainly what one user over on r/PokemonROMhacks thinks, after taking to Reddit to share their thoughts on the first few hours of Pokémon Black and White 3: Genesis. “Started this yesterday and am around finished the third or fourth gym,” they shared. “This game is amazing. Coming from someone who knows pretty minimal of the B&W story but played the games, this is a fun third trip through Unova. The areas you know and love are there with some twists, as the region has evolved in the years since its predecessors.
They go on to describe that the Gen 2-style pixel graphics have “never looked better” whilst praising the easy-to-moderate difficulty and wide variety of Pokémon. “If you are looking for a Gen 2 ROM hack and enjoy the Black and White series of games, or even have never played but just want something new to try, you should totally try this hack out!” They concluded.
Getting first-hand praise for a ROM hack is the best incentive to play that you could possibly get, and better yet, Pokémon Black and White 3: Genesis is completely free to download and try out for yourself now.
