More than three decades after Neon Genesis Evangelion first changed anime forever, the legendary franchise is preparing to begin a brand-new chapter. Officially announced during the EVANGELION:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion celebration in February 2026, the upcoming television series marks the franchise’s first completely original anime project since Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time concluded the Rebuild saga in 2021.
Although many details remain under wraps, the production has already assembled one of the industry’s most fascinating creative teams. With NieR creator Yoko Taro writing the series, Studio Khara partnering with CloverWorks, and longtime Evangelion collaborators returning behind the scenes, anticipation has continued to grow following a new English trailer unveiled during Anime Expo 2026.
Evangelion’s New Anime Is Officially in Production
The biggest development arrived on February 23, 2026, when Studio Khara confirmed that a completely new Evangelion anime series had officially entered production. The announcement closed the final program of the franchise’s 30th anniversary event in Yokohama, ending years of speculation about where the iconic series would go after the Rebuild films.
Since then, fans have received another significant update. During CloverWorks’ Anime Expo 2026 panel, the project debuted its first official English-language promotional video. While it largely mirrors the teaser first shown in Japan, it introduces the project to a worldwide audience and confirms that international promotion is now underway.
Despite the excitement, the studio has intentionally remained secretive. No release window, cast announcements, episode count, or story synopsis has been revealed. That silence has only fueled discussion, especially since Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time appeared to provide a definitive conclusion to Shinji Ikari’s journey.
Evangelion’s New Anime Trailer Raises More Questions Than Answers
Calling the promotional video a traditional trailer may be generous. Rather than revealing characters or plot details, it serves primarily as a confirmation that the project is real while embracing the surreal atmosphere that has defined Evangelion for decades.
The teaser shows haunting imagery, cryptic phrases, ominous narration, and a brief glimpse of what appears to be a stunning new Evangelion unit. The visuals avoid explaining anything directly, instead encouraging viewers to interpret symbolism and speculate about the story, much like previous entries in the franchise.
Its unsettling tone has already generated countless fan theories online. Some viewers believe the footage hints at an entirely new continuity, while others suspect it could connect to existing mythology. At this stage, however, Studio Khara has provided no official explanation, leaving nearly every frame open to interpretation.
An All-Star Creative Team Is Leading The Next Evangelion Generation
The upcoming series brings together an unusually accomplished production team. Yoko Taro serves as series composer and scriptwriter, marking one of his highest-profile anime projects to date. Best known for creating the NieR and Drakengard franchises, he has frequently cited Neon Genesis Evangelion as his greatest creative inspiration, making his involvement especially meaningful.
Directing duties are shared by Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toko Yatabe. Tsurumaki previously directed several Rebuild films and recently led Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Yatabe worked as assistant director on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time and has contributed key animation to acclaimed productions including Mob Psycho 100, Weathering with You, and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.
Music will be composed by Keiichi Okabe, whose celebrated work on the NieR series helped establish its emotional identity. Animation is being produced through a collaboration between Studio Khara and CloverWorks, combining the studio that carried the Rebuild era with one of anime’s most successful modern production houses. With no premiere date announced, many fans believe the series is unlikely to arrive before late 2027, but for now, the mystery surrounding Evangelion is still part of its appeal.
