Before Reacher season 4’s premiere on Prime Video, it has been confirmed that season 5 will adapt Lee Child’s Make Me. Make Me serves as the twentieth book in the Jack Reacher series and seems like an intriguing book choice for the show. A closer look at Make Me‘s story and character beats also reveals how it could finally give us a worthy replacement for both Roscoe and Neagley.
Like the original Jack Reacher books, Prime Video’s Reacher, too, has given its main character fleeting love interests. With each new season, Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher has pursued a new romantic interest before moving on to a new town and leaving all established ties behind. Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley has been the only consistent thread in his narrative across all three Reacher seasons.
However, considering how Neagley, too, is getting her own spin-off soon, it seems possible that she will stop appearing in every Reacher season. While it seems unlikely that Reacher season 4 will give us a worthy replacement for Neagley or Roscoe, season 5 will have the perfect character to replace both.
By Adapting Lee Child’s Make Me, Reacher Season 5 Fills Roscoe & Neagley’s Boots With 1 Character
Lee Child’s Make Me is another Jack Reacher story that unfolds in a small town. Called Mother’s Rest, the small town initially makes Reacher stay because he grows increasingly curious about the origins of its name. However, he soon encounters a Chinese American woman named Michelle Chang whose search for a lost associate pulls Reacher into another massive conspiracy.
Michelle Chang almost comes off as the perfect combination of both Roscoe and Neagley.
Like Roscoe, she starts out as Jack Reacher’s main investigative partner in Make Me before her relationship with him takes a romantic turn. Similar to Neagley, she not only has a law enforcement background (former FBI) but also works as a private investigator. Instead of coming off as a sidekick like season 2’s Dixon and season 3’s Duffy, Chang is actively involved in the central investigation.
Similar to both Roscoe and Neagley, she proves to be an incredibly competent ally for Reacher and her relationship with him carries genuine emotional weight and mutual intellectual attraction.
Since season 1, most of Jack Reacher’s romantic endeavors have felt a little too shallow and sometimes even forced and unnecessary. By adapting Make Me, however, the Prime Video detective series promises to bring a female lead who is the perfect blend of Roscoe’s emotional chemistry with Neagley’s competence.
While Roscoe and Neagley will remain two of the most memorable side characters of the Prime Video series, Michelle Chang in Reacher season 5 could become the franchise’s most well-rounded female lead.
Reacher Season 5’s Small Town Setting Is Another Big Strength
Out of the three Reacher seasons so far, seasons 1 and 3 have arguably been far better than the second installment. Some viewers even argue that Reacher season 1 is where the Prime Video show peaked. One of the biggest reasons why Reacher season 1 is still so loved is that it unfolded a quintessential Jack Reacher narrative in a small town setting.
It perfectly portrayed Reacher as a mysterious stranger who initially came off as a big fish in a small pond, which truly highlighted his larger-than-life characterization. The small town setting and limited cast also allowed the season to capture an immediate intimacy between Roscoe and Reacher as they relied heavily on one another.
Lee Child’s Make Me does something similar with its relatively quaint setting and gradually unfolds Reacher and Chang’s romantic narrative. Before the book ends, Reacher’s relationship with Chang almost seems reminiscent of his dynamic with Roscoe as the two embrace the present without forcing long-term commitment.
Hopefully, Reacher season 5 will leverage its source material’s strengths.
