That ceiling is long gone. Deadpool proved an R-rated superhero movie could become a worldwide blockbuster. Joker crossed $1 billion, while Christopher Nolan somehow turned a 3-hour historical drama about theoretical physics into the nearly billion-dollar Oppenheimer. Meanwhile, several R-rated comic book movies now sit alongside the highest-grossing superhero movies ever.
Now, Nolan has broken the R-rated record himself. The Odyssey recently passed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. As of September 10, 2026, Nolan’s epic has earned approximately $1.64 billion worldwide, putting more than $300 million between it and the previous record holder.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about the top 10 is how little these movies otherwise have in common. Superheroes make a strong showing, but the list also includes horror, anime, science fiction, historical drama, and a Chinese mystery-comedy many American moviegoers may never have seen.

Detective Chinatown 3 — $686.3 Million
The first surprise arrives immediately. Detective Chinatown 3, the third movie in Chen Sicheng’s Chinese mystery-comedy franchise, earned approximately $686.3 million worldwide despite having nowhere near the profile in the United States of most of the other movies on this list.
The 2021 sequel sends detectives Tang Ren and Qin Feng to Tokyo for another murder investigation, but its box office is arguably more interesting than the plot in this context. Most of its enormous total came from China, where it became a Lunar New Year phenomenon. Its placement is a reminder that worldwide rankings can look very different from the films dominating American theaters.

Pennywise had already terrified generations of Stephen King readers before Andy Muschietti’s It arrived in 2017, but few could have predicted just how enormous the adaptation would become. The film ultimately earned approximately $719.8 million worldwide.
That remains extraordinary for an R-rated horror movie centered on a shape-shifting monster that preys primarily on children. Strong reviews, King’s enormous readership, and Bill Skarsgård’s instantly recognizable Pennywise turned It into something audiences wanted to experience together. Nearly a decade later, its commercial performance still puts most adult horror releases to shame.

The Matrix Reloaded — $741.8 Million
The original Matrix changed science fiction in 1999, but The Matrix Reloaded showed just how large the franchise had become. Released four years later, the sequel earned approximately $741.8 million worldwide and remains the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
The sequel dramatically increased the scale of Neo’s war against the machines, with the freeway chase becoming one of the defining action sequences of the early 2000s. While The Matrix is far more cyberpunk than the hard sci-fi movies that followed in later decades, its success proved ambitious R-rated science fiction could still compete at blockbuster scale.

For years, conventional wisdom suggested that superhero movies needed PG-13 ratings to reach the widest possible audience. Deadpool gleefully proved otherwise when Ryan Reynolds’ first solo outing as Wade Wilson earned approximately $782.8 million worldwide in 2016.
The R rating became part of the attraction rather than something the studio needed to work around. It allowed Deadpool to be as violent, profane, and inappropriate as fans expected. The movie’s success helped open the door for more adult comic book adaptations, and it remains one of the best superhero movies of the past decade for precisely that reason: it never tried to behave like every other Marvel release.

Its success shows how dramatically anime’s global theatrical audience has expanded. Infinity Castle benefited from years of investment in the Demon Slayer series, functioning as a major continuation rather than a standalone movie. Almost nothing about Oppenheimer screams conventional summer blockbuster. Christopher Nolan’s 2023 movie runs 3 hours, carries an R rating, and spends much of its runtime discussing theoretical physics, government hearings, and the creation of the atomic bomb.
It earned approximately $975.8 million worldwide anyway. The simultaneous arrival of Barbie helped turn opening weekend into a cultural event, but Oppenheimer had exceptional staying power of its own. Nolan’s reputation, Cillian Murphy’s performance, and the promise of seeing the Trinity test in IMAX transformed a dense historical biography into one of the year’s biggest movies.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck anchors a bleak psychological drama influenced more by gritty crime cinema than a conventional Batman adventure. There is no caped hero coming to save Gotham, and the action is tiny compared with most comic book movies. If any movie seemed built to take Joker’s record, it was Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds finally brought Wade Wilson into the MCU while Hugh Jackman returned as Wolverine after seemingly ending his run with Logan. The crossover earned approximately $1.338 billion worldwide.
Marvel did not have to make either character safer to attract an Avengers-sized audience. The film leaned into the violence and humor expected from Deadpool while capitalizing on decades of attachment to Jackman’s Wolverine. That attachment remains remarkably strong even as several of the oldest X-Men characters are still missing from Marvel’s movies.

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic has earned approximately $1.64 billion worldwide as of September 10, 2026. On paper, it is another unlikely candidate for this record: a nearly 3-hour adaptation of ancient literature centered on Odysseus’ journey home after the Trojan War.
Nolan turned that material into one of the defining theatrical events of 2026. His devotion to IMAX once again became a major selling point, while Matt Damon leads a cast that also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson. For audiences already drawn to the greatest historical adventure movies, Nolan essentially delivered the genre on the largest possible scale.
Deadpool & Wolverine demonstrated that an R-rated superhero movie could make more than $1.3 billion. The Odyssey has now gone considerably further without a superhero anywhere in sight. For the moment, the R-rated worldwide box office record isn’t even particularly close.
