Rochelle Aytes S.W.A.T. Spinoff Return After Shocking Hondo Story Update Addressed By Shemar Moore (Exclusive)

EXCLUSIVE: Shemar Moore opens up about that S.W.A.T. Exiles heartbreaker.

Moore returns as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. for the long-awaited S.W.A.T. spinoff. The premiere episode, which is now streaming on Starz, opens with the unexpected reveal that Hondo is seemingly no longer with his wife, Nichelle (played by Rochelle Aytes). The dismaying development is part of a larger narrative about how Hondo’s life has spiraled in the time since the original S.W.A.T. came to an end.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for our S.W.A.T. Exiles cover story, Aytes’ absence from the show is addressed. Moore, who is also an executive producer on the spinoff, notes that Aytes was still working on the CBS medical drama Watson with Morris Chestnut at the time that Exiles was filming. But in the quote below, it’s noted that Aytes may appear in the already-renewed Exiles season 2:

For the first season, you learn that Hondo’s divorced, and I think you’ll see that more in conversation and melancholy mood and some things Hondo will say. You’ll see it in how he lives, you’ll see the changes in his life, it may not be massaged out with picture. I can tell you that Nichelle was busy working with Morris Chestnut on Watson, so she wasn’t able to come to this first season. But now, from what I understand, Nichelle is available, so that’ll be a creative question for the writers and Mr. Jason Ning, the showrunner.

Moore also talks about how the idea of Hondo being divorced came about, explaining that it was his idea. He addresses potential backlash to the twist, elaborating on the fact that he was partly “bored” of having to play Hondo as a good guy and suggests wanting to take things in a different direction:

As far as being divorced and mom passing, that was my idea. So, if fans are frustrated by that, it’s not because I don’t like Nichelle, Rochelle Aytes is the actress who played it, it wasn’t about that. There was a small part of me that was bored of being squeaky clean in the sense of, “Yeah, I’m a tough guy, I’m a good guy, Hondo saves the day and Hondo’s always going to try to save the day.”

S.W.A.T. Exiles does a fair amount, right off the bat, to differentiate itself from the CBS procedural that aired for nearly a decade. When viewers are first reintroduced to the character, he is working as security for a wealthy tech villain, and he’s clearly unhappy about the path that led him here. Even so, he is reluctant to serve as the leader of an experimental unit comprised of young recruits.

It’s later that the premiere episode confirms, in a scene between Hondo and Deacon, that Nichelle and Hondo have divorced. A direct reason is not stated, at least not in the first episode, but viewers can clearly see that it is likely related to Hondo’s change in attitude and circumstances. As it stands, Hondo can only see his daughter, Vivienne, on certain days.

That will have to be elaborated on by showrunner and executive producer Jason Ning in the upcoming episodes, and it likely will be. For the moment, however, the spinoff does have more immediate concerns. There is the fact that, for example, there’s someone on Hondo’s team that seems hell-bent on destroying him. Still, with S.W.A.T. Exiles season 2 already greenlit, the chances of a Nichelle return and a reconciliation remain open.

New episodes of S.W.A.T. Exiles arrive on STARZ weekly on Fridays after the premiere date, until the finale on November 27.
