Thanks to movies like Alien and Blade Runner, Sir Ridley Scott has fundamentally altered the trajectory of sci-fi cinema. Not only has he earned the right to leave the genre behind with confidence over his lasting legacy on it, but he has more than earned a retirement, knowing how many other adventures across all genres he has impressed audiences and critics with.
Still, Scott somehow keeps moving forward and releasing impressive adventures, including this year’s The Dog Stars. The movie hit theaters in August and is now set for a home video release, coming to Digital on October 27 and then hitting 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 1.
Set in a world where survival is instinct, but humanity is a choice, The Dog Stars follows Hig (Jacob Elordi), a young pilot who, alongside military survivalist Bangley (Josh Brolin), has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world. When a mysterious radio transmission breaks through their solitude, Hig is compelled to venture into the unknown in search of the hope, connection and humanity he still believes exists.
Boasting a stellar ensemble cast including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong, The Dog Stars will arrive in stunning 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range (HDR), a wider color spectrum and immersive audio, delivering the ultimate home-viewing experience. Audiences will have a chance to set out into the world beyond with exclusive bonus content offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, along with never-before-seen deleted scenes.
Special features on the upcoming release include the following:
- The Making of The Dog Stars: Get an intimate look behind the scenes of the film.
- Deleted Scenes: Check out these scenes that didn’t make the final cut.
- Jasper’s Funeral
- Hig Mourns
- Welcome Dinner
- Roaches’ Warning
- Hig & Cima
- A Conversation With Pops
- Airport Alternate Exit
The movie landed in theaters with a relatively underwhelming reception. The Dog Stars only sits at 41% positive reviews on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, and also had a disappointing performance at the box office. There are a number of reasons why the movie might not have found a wide audience, but with movies like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey still scoring huge numbers at theaters for months, along with smaller titles like Coyote vs. Acme earning rave reviews, there seemed to be too much competition for Dog Stars to find its audience.
Perhaps the movie’s release on home video will help it find a larger following.
