Another curveball in the game of love involved pitchers Fritz PetersonandMike Kekichand their wives.
After Fritz joined the New York Yankees in 1966 and Mike was traded to the team three years later, they quickly became friends. But by 1972, according to The Boston Globe, they’d teamed up with each other’s spouses—Fritzforming a relationship with Mike’s wifeSusanneand Mike developing a romantic connection with Fritz’s wifeMarilyn. Per the publication, Mike’s daughters moved with Susanne to Fritz’s house and Fritz’s sons relocated to Mike’s home with Marilyn.
“Unless people know the full details, it could turn out to be a nasty type thing,” Mike reportedly told the Daily News at the time. “Don’t say this was wife-swapping, because it wasn’t. We didn’t swap wives, we swapped lives.”
While Mike and Marilyn’s romance eventually struck out, Fritz and Susanne wed in 1974 and were together until his passing in 2023.
“It’s a love story,” Fritz told the Palm Beach Post in 2013. “It wasn’t anything dirty.”
