PlayStation Plus Extra First Free Game For June Officially Confirmed

Last week saw the unfortunate news that support for Destiny 2 would be coming to an end after almost a decade. Developed by Bungie and acting as a sequel to 2014’s Destiny, Destiny 2 has been THE free-to-play shooter since 2017, welcoming multiple expansions, events, and many awards and nominations.

However, last week Bungie shared the unfortunate news that Destiny 2 will be coming to an end following the launch of one more live-service content update on 9 June. The official statement reads:

“For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”

Although support for Destiny 2 will come to an end next month and will no longer receive any updates, Bungie assure fans that the game will remain playable, “just as the original Destiny is today.” “We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created,” the statement continued. “Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all.”

It is a heartbreaking time for fans, and as somebody who has put thousands of hours into the Destiny saga, I share the pain. However, it is not all doom and gloom as the Destiny 2: Legacy Collection is set to arrive in the PlayStation Plus library, allowing users to access the first-person shooter at no extra cost.

Available for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium/Deluxe members, Destiny 2: Legacy Edition includes the Destiny 2 base game, as well as the Lightfall, The Witch Queen, Beyond Light, Shadowkeep, Forsaken, and the 30th Anniversary packs. Arriving on 9 June, this will give fans the chance to relive some of the best expansions of the past few years, or even give new fans the opportunity to dive into the action before support ends.

The Destiny 2: Legacy Edition was shared over on r/PlayStationPlus, with the news that the rest of the Game Catalog line-up will be revealed next month. In the meantime, users shared their thoughts on the arrival of the Destiny 2: Legacy Edition. “This does not include Edge of Fate or Renegades for anyone wondering, so you will have to buy those as well if you want to play all the content currently available,” one user pointed out.

However, another user was feeling less optimistic, adding, “Oh nice, a game that ends support in a few weeks and doesn’t include everything. Just what I always wanted.” Another agreed, sharing, “I love that despite the game shutting all future development, Bungie reached for our wallets one last time. I’m trying to hold back the tears.”

The arrival of Destiny 2: Legacy Edition may not be on everybody’s radar, but the option is certainly there as it arrives on the PlayStation Plus catalog next month.
