Prime Video’s God of War series may have found its new Kratos in the wake of an on-set injury that caused a major setback on production, necessitating a recast.
Actor Ryan Hurst, who had been cast to play Kratos in the series, suffered a torn bicep that requires a minimum of six months to heal. That, in turn, would’ve halted production until 2027. The decision was made to recast the role, which means that all four episodes that have already been shot will have to be fully re-shot with the new actor they bring in to play Kratos.
It seems as though Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television might have found their new Kratos, as Variety reports that Dave Bautista (Knock at the Cabin, Dune: Part Two) is currently in talks to take on the role.
It’s a good move, considering Bautista is coming off of production on Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot, where he got in fighting shape as The Kurgan. Time will tell whether the new casting will alter the series’ approach to Kratos.
Callum Vinson (“Chucky”) stars as Atreus, Kratos’ young son.
The series follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) as Odin,Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur,Max Parker (“Vampire Academy”) as Heimdall,Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“NOS4A2”) as Thor,Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) as Sif,Alastair Duncan (God of War) as Mimir,Jeff Gulka (“The X-Files”) as Sindri, andDanny Woodburn (“The Witcher”) as Brok.
Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Outlander”) serves as showrunner and writer.
The God of War production is currently on hiatus, but the studios hope to get back on track this fall. Stay tuned.
